the world
has no right to my heart
The world has no place in our bed
They don't get to know what I said
@ Ezekiel Vylasar
If for some reason, one weren’t to believe in the deities who’d carefully shaped the world to their ideals, one certainly would after birthing new life into it. No prayer or advise from the midwife could’ve prepared her for this. If she didn’t know any better or hadn’t been kept grounded by crushing her husband’s hand between her fingers, she would’ve sworn to have witnessed a glimpse of the afterlife there and then.

The room had been crowded with people all keeping their eyes on her at some point, all of their faces but a blur after living through the agonising contractions which felt like an eternity. While she had felt fairly anxious being surrounded by all of them, their presence had become the least of her concerns when the room – or rather the entire castle had been haunted by her deafening screams of desperation. The sorceress couldn’t recall how many times she had claimed to be dying, sobbing her cries for help to nobody in particular as she clung to her husband’s hand.

Even the silent but continuous prayers of those present within the room couldn’t reassure her in the midst of bringing their child into this world. While her mind repeatedly convinced her that she wouldn’t live through this, a part of her seemed to know and reassure her that this wouldn’t be the case. Those final moments of pushing their child from the womb into the realm of the living were spent in such intuitive state that she could barely remember. Perhaps all women were born with this unknown source of magic. A type of magic which didn’t depend on a source nor bloodline, but simply manifesting itself the minute that a woman’s body was no longer just that of her own. To her, it was a force more powerful than any sorcerer, elf or mage ever got to call upon.

She couldn’t recall much before the intense feeling of relief and the enthusiasm exclaimed by those surrounding her as the young healer, which guided the entirety of her birth, eventually carried the child over to her. Her chest still heaved as she could finally feel the child’s skin against that of her own, tears of relief, fear, pride and fulfilment streaming down her cheeks without even noticing their presence. She only briefly glanced up from the child’s dark locks to look up at her husband before smile grew even wider at hearing the healer’s words.

A girl.

A daughter. A healthy one, most importantly. The fresh Vylasar blood their family so intensely desired. Thoughts about whether she would eventually inherit their magic did not concern the sorceress as of now. She had proved herself a worthy spouse by granting her husband and their family healthy baby. An achievement which was well worth the tears, worries and sleepless nights.

Lost in the sight of her beautiful daughter, the question asked by those now carefully circling the bed almost went right over her head. But she had her answer ready, long before this designated day. Her gaze averted itself towards her husband. Briefly looking into the odd coloured eyes she had been foolish enough to fall for all those moons ago. The man of which she now held the firstborn child, their child, that she was about to announce the name of.

”Callista,” the sorceress quietly spoke, her eyes glued to the child once more. ”She will be known as Callista Vylasar.” Her voice was recognisably weak, yet she paid it no mind. Right now, in this very moment, worries could not reach her. They would, eventually, as reality would dawn upon her and the challenge of motherhood would await her. But not now, not in the eye of the storm that was this moment of serenity. For now, she had succeeded. Succeeded in serving the family and honouring the customs she had once despised, and feeling an immense sense of bliss in doing so.

The Moon
a spectral witness to the secrets concealed,
Illuminates the night, where darker truths are revealed.
@ Chaska Vylasar
The moment the summoner was urgently called home because his wife was in labour, his heart started pounding and it hadn't stopped since. Once he had reached the tumultuous room where it was happening, he had hurried to Chaska's side and hadn't left. His hand was in hers. The first hours he had tried to speak, but he had given up after a while. He just endured to watch her suffer. He had never felt as powerless as this in his life.

Her cries for help went through his skin like a dull axe. At one point he had started yelling to the healers as well that they should do something about it. Something to make that pain she was enduring stop. At a certain moment in time, he really thought she was dying. That the child that they had created was killing her while it crawled its way out of her. No matter how many tears he would wipe away, there would always be more. He even caught himself silently praying that the deities would make this torture stop. If they had done something wrong with their union, or conceiving this child, they would punish him and not her. He had committed all the sins in this marriage. He should pay for it.

After what felt like an eternity, something in the air started to shift and the tension became palpable. The end was near as Ezekiel started to squeeze her hand back. He didn't dare look anymore. He couldn't even breathe. He didn't know where his feelings towards the birth of this child had shifted, but now that it was happening he felt this ache in his heart that he could not describe. Everything, everybody in this room, had always been a burden to him: this marriage, the pregnancy, and the child that kept him bound to this place. But now he felt like if he lost any of them, he would never forgive himself. He had promised Chaska he would love this child, and for the first time, he felt a flutter of that love manifesting in his chest.

The words of the healer that broke between the heaving of his wife, made the summoner finally take breath again. He was holding Chaska's hand between both of his and he pressed her fingers to his lips as he whispered a silent thanks to Lythrana.

When Ezekiel opened his eyes again, he saw his wife smile brightly. After everything she had just endured, she looked happy. He let her hand slip through his fingers as he took his first look at the baby at her chest. She was so terribly small. He never knew babies were this small when they were first born. So helpless. So innocent. He cracked a small smile when he kept watching her for a long while, his eyes clouded with emotions he could not pinpoint. It didn't really dawn on him that this was his child as well. That part of him was in her.

A few of the people looked over as a question was asked. But he didn't know how to answer it. He looked over to Chaska. He had trusted her with that honour a long time ago. Whatever she pleased. It didn't feel right to have any kind of say in these kind of things. She had always felt more like Chaska's child than their child.

His wife announced the name of their child. Callista. Ezekiel nodded slowly, not averting his eyes from mother and child. That was a fine name. It suited the family and matched Chaska perfectly.

When the healers finally finished up their work, they were left alone in the room. For the first time the three of them together. Ezekiel had not left the side of the bed, looking at Chaska and the bundled-up Callista, still so small and fragile. He had no idea where they should go from here. The day he dreaded that would come for all this time was finally here. It was still daunting. He was still frightened that he would do everything wrong. But that little baby wasn't half as scary as he might have thought.

‘‘So, Callista,’’ he finally mustered over the silence in a small voice. ‘‘That's pretty.’’ Ezekiel looked up to his wife as he said so. He was still processing what had just happened. He had felt so useless. So why was he rewarded with this glowy feeling in his chest? He looked back at the child. Oh by Lytrhana, what would the three of them do now?

the world

The world has no place in our bed

@ Ezekiel Vylasar
She could barely grasp the idea of the intense metamorphosis that was motherhood. That young lady who had been forced to marry a distant relative and live inside the castle all those moons ago seemed to have vanished completely. Well, mostly. While she wouldn’t like to admit it, part of that young woman still lingered somewhere beneath the surface. That selfish part which, eventually, made her so desperately wanted to secure her role as this man’s wife in order to assure herself a comfortable future despite her illness.

Yet the entirely unfamiliar feelings of wanting the best for her daughter certainly overshadowed these self-centered tendencies. She would give this child the world and more, no matter what it took, and briefly glancing into her husband’s gaze, she quietly prayed that he would feel the same way.

His gaze was softer than she had imagined. Especially now that those gathered to assist her birth slowly began to take their leave. They would check on her again soon, but for now their baby had been bathed, fed and swaddled in a comfortable bundle of linen. Yet she didn’t want to part with her daughter just yet, carefully holding her within her arms as she slept soundly through the quiet echoes of footsteps leaving the room.

The three of them were left in a quiet room, until the sound of her husband’s voice broke the silence. Her eyes briefly met his, before shifting all of her attention back to their child once more. ”Hmm,” she quietly hummed in agreement, having spent many of her sleepless nights pondering over names. ”I was hoping you’d think so.” Their quiet voices were quite the contrast comparing to how they had screamed at one another several times before. Right now, in this moment, she couldn’t even imagine ever having to raise her voice like that to him again. She wouldn’t want to.

”Can you believe it?” she quietly continued, averting her gaze back to the summoner beside her, finally able to hold it for a while. ”She is ours.” Her words were a mixture of joy, disbelief and maybe a hint of uncertainty even. With the silence now surrounding them, reality had a chance to dawn on her for as far as this state of bliss and exhaustion allowed it to.

”Come,” the sorceress then ordered him, though it was more of a suggestion. ”Sit down for a moment.” Her words came with an attempt to make room for him by scooching over just a little, though her aching body was quick to refrain her from doing so as a sharp inhale escaped through her teeth. She just wanted him close right now. To gently hold her as he took in the sight of their child. To realise what all of this meant for them. Perhaps this would be the night where not only a child and a mother were born, but a husband capable of loving both of them.

The Moon
a spectral witness to the secrets concealed,

@ Chaska Vylasar
The summoner had barely gotten used to his new role as husband. Not to mention that he had been terrible at that as well. But now he had another title attached to his name, ready to be written down on his tombstone might he find an untimely end. "Father". He had no idea how to act like one. Both he and Myrddin had never known a father. He had seen it from the sidelines, sure. He saw how his uncles raised their children. But now it was his turn and he couldn't help to feel miles out of his league.

So he took it one - ironically - baby step at the time. He stayed by Chaska's side as he was supposed to. She was probably exhausted. He didn't even where she mustered the willpower to stay awake. He spoke shortly about their daughter's name. He kept stealing glances towards the tiny bundle in his wife's arms. He had two girls to take care of now, whom he should protect diligently. He had to be better. He couldn't help but feel so scared that he would eventually let them down. How could he be selfish any longer now that she was born?

Chaska woke him from his realm of thoughts as she asked him if he could believe it. He huffed an airy laugh as he silently shook his head. No, he could not believe any of this. How the two of them could produce something so precious? It would haunt his thoughts every night before he fell asleep. He could already feel it. The immanent dread that eventually something would end up going badly. ‘‘I still can't believe you just did.. that,’’ he spoke as he gestured weakly to the room. How she had endured that torture and smile afterwards? It was something else. ‘‘You did well,’’ he added softly afterwards.

When she invited him to her bed, he looked up rather surprised. But he quickly jumped to her aid as she hissed in pain. ‘‘Easy,’’ he spoke as he leaned in closer, yet not knowing what to do after that. Wouldn't he just hurt her more as he... he didn't know what he was planning to do. Or should do. Or why she even wanted him closer. It was this kind of uncertainness that would usually cause him to snap.

So Ezekiel obliged her silently. He placed himself on the mattress ever so gently, barely making it shift under his weight. He looked at his wife with a hint of a smile and then looked down at their daughter. It was the first time he saw her so up close without the chaos of all the family and staff in the room. She had those chubby baby cheeks, a button nose and a few dark strands of hair peeking out. At least she took after her mother. He exhaled deeply as he kept staring at her in awe.

The world has no place in our bed

@ Ezekiel Vylasar
After all those moons spent within castle, this very moment could’ve easily been the most peaceful one. Ever since her arrival things had become hectic. Some of it was to blame on her own reckless behaviour back when she and Ezekiel would foolishly mess around, though most of the turbulence within their fragile marriage had been caused by her husband instead.

Yet, in this rare moment of peace, she refrained from living in the past for once. He had been present during the entirety of her pregnancy and supported her where necessary. Perhaps she could’ve simply imagined it, but the sorceress almost swore to have felt a faint return of their previous spark. May it not be as passionate as it once was. Enough to strengthen their marriage for the sake of their daughter, perhaps.

A faint chuckle rolled over her lips as he acknowledged her otherworldly deed of birthing their daughter. She could barely believe it herself, yet claimed to know exactly why men hadn’t been the ones granted with the curse and the blessing to birth their offspring. They simply wouldn’t survive. ”I know,” she quietly spoke, though the hint of a smile laced her lips. ”It seems like the goddess is on our side for once.” Or either one or both of them wouldn’t have made it out of this experience alive.

She could definitely feel the atmosphere shift as he approached her, gently letting himself sink into mattress. It was almost ironic how they went from not being able to resist one another, to having trouble seeking out the slightest amount of innocent intimacy. Even now, with a child which was the product of what she believed to have been a blooming romance.

Perhaps her current emotional state had something to do with this sudden, almost forgiving behaviour towards the sorcerer, but as he silently stared at their daughter in awe she couldn’t help but wish for things to return to how they once were. Maybe he truly was capable of change now that she had given him a healthy child, proving herself a worthy spouse. Maybe their chapter hadn’t been closed entirely, and today would be the moment where they would flip the page instead. A new beginning.

”You haven’t had the chance to hold her yet,” she quietly acknowledged as she realised how aimlessly she’d been staring at her husband admiring their daughter. Carefully shifting her body towards him, she gently held out his child for him to hold. ”It’s alright,” she encouraged him before he even had the chance to refuse. ”As long as you’re careful, you won’t harm her.” Knowing him, he’d rather keep his distance. But she wouldn’t let him. After all he had promised to love their child, and she would remind him as many times necessary.

The Moon

@ Chaska Vylasar
Maybe if everything had been different, if he had been different, the young couple could enjoy this moment more. Instead of this tense, careful happiness, they could express the bliss of having their first child in delight. Still, even if times were different and he wouldn't have met a certain necromancer, wouldn't he have made a different mistake along the way? Or would it still be like it was, fighting every day because there was no reason for him to feel guilty about anything? Just remorseful for the situation they were forced into.

Ezekiel pursed his lips together as she spoke about how the goddess was on their side. Yes, she blessed them with a healthy child. But would a child thrive in this environment that they had created? Still, he gave her a tiny smile. He wore the goddess in all her phases on his back for eternity. Fate could change quickly, just like the goddess changed her face.

There was a time when the two of them reached a content life together. One in which they could tolerate each other, where they enjoyed each other's company and maybe were the only ones in the world who could understand one another in some ways. There was much that Ezekiel was still suffering alone and was too stubborn to tell anyone about. Ezekiel had ruined that fragile peace. Most nights, he did not regret a thing. He would not love a woman some people forced him to marry. Yet, on nights like this, he started doubting himself.

Would a child change all of that? Was that the reason couples stayed together in their family? Not his parents. They were even selfish enough to split the children between them. The failure of his parents was the reason he promised he would not fail his own. But what if he still did? What if the goddess decided to change faces again?

Chaska pulled him out of his thoughts when she mentioned he hadn't held their daughter yet. Immediately his eyes went wide and he looked back up at her. ‘‘Oh no- I- don't.’’ He could barely voice a whole word to her as the bundle was directed his way. He looked at Chaska when she spoke that he wouldn't harm her. Careful? Yes, that was exactly what he was worried about. And yet he still very carefully took the baby from her arms. For a while he was holding her awkwardly in front of him, looking at the baby, almost expecting her to start crying. That luckily didn't happen, but he had no idea where to go from here.

The summoner didn't move a muscle. He barely dared to breathe, afraid he would disturb the child. However, after a while of sitting very uncomfortably, he shifted the child to his arms ever so gently and rested her on his chest, just like he had seen Chaska do. When he looked down at the baby again, he just felt so overwhelmed with emotions. All the things he promised and messed up. He could feel the corners of his mouth pulling downwards. Oh by the Gods. He looked up to try to stop the tears from falling, but he couldn't help it after a while. A shaky breath passed his lips as a small tear dropped from the corner of his eye. But he couldn't wipe it away, because he couldn't move his hands, afraid he would somehow hurt her.

The sorceress couldn’t help but wonder what the future held for their daughter. Would her childhood be as careless as her own had been? Would she be able to look at her parents with pride? Bringing this child into the world might’ve been considered an easy task compared to what lay ahead of them. Though, as long as she made sure to say her prayers each day and loyally adhere to the duties being laid out for her, it had to be ok.

At the very least the two of them wouldn’t be alone. The castle’s staff members would lend her a hand wherever needed. And Ezekiel? He’d just have to be present in her life. It would be enough. He wouldn’t have to bother looking after his daughter in any way, she’d make sure he wouldn’t. As long as he kept his promise to love this child, everything would turn out fine. Perhaps, he’d even learn to love his wife in the process and forget about that Xailan man or any of his past lovers altogether.

Of course her he was hesitant when offered his child to hold, the sorceress hadn’t expected anything else. A selfish, bland and reckless man like him had probably never anticipated a situation in which a newborn child of his own would be handed to him. As far as she knew, his mind never strayed far from his own wishes and desires, purposefully ignoring any responsibilities which did not cater to his ideals. And yet he’d eventually put himself into the position of becoming a husband, a father, even, which he now hesitantly accepted as he carefully took the child from her arms, awkwardly holding her as if even glancing at her would be able to cause harm.

She didn’t say anything, just carefully monitored the situation as her gaze repeatedly shifted from her husband to their child. Perhaps he needed a moment for reality to set in, for which she couldn’t entirely blame him. She had been carrying this child for moons, already able to get used to the idea as she eventually felt her kicks and movements long before she was born. He didn’t have the time to form such connection yet. But he did now, and as moments quietly passed by, she could sense his behaviour shift slowly.

A warm smile played on her lips as she finally noticed the release of his tension, carefully holding their child against his chest as his gaze seemed to be glued to her little face, but instead of smiling, however, his thoughts seemed to be somewhere else, somewhere dark and melancholic, even. Within the dim-lit room it was quite a challenge to recognise his expressions, but when she noticed his eyes welled up with tears and heard his shaking breath, her heart dropped for a moment.

She had not anticipated this. Her husband, that selfish little boy who had caused her more than enough heartache and distress, was crying at the sight of their newborn daughter. And to her surprise, her stomach turned at the sight. These didn’t seem like happy tears at all. ”Hey,” she quietly whispered as she carefully leaned in closer to him, not entirely sure what to do or say, and if he even deserved such treatment after leaving her a sobbing mess for so many nights. ”It’s alright,” the sorceress continued, raising her arm to tuck his darkened locks away from his face and eyes before resting her hand against his arm. ”We’ll be fine.” Perhaps the words were a reminder for the both of them, rather than just words of reassurance for the crying father of her child.

A quiet sigh left her lips as she rested her head against his shoulder, her gaze shifting back to the sight of their daughter. ”You know,” the sorceress silently started, breaking the brief but deafening silence haunting the room. ”Even though she’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever witnessed, I would’ve loved to see her with your silver hair.”
