Eli Dumont

Details

Eli comes from a wealthy, rich family. Which, despite the fact that he doesn’t have that anymore, reflects in his clothing style. He usually wears basic clothes, but he does spend quite some money on the quality of it. Considering he is an engineer, you will most probably encounter him with his hands stained with grease, and goggles on his head. Occasionally, when he has been reading and writing for a long time, he wears round glasses. Eli has a permanent fatigue look on him, which he weaves away as the result of his work.

Eli is naturally kind to people. He can be snarky and irritated when he doesn’t have his day, but he means no harm to strangers. He can be absent in conversation sometimes, as if his mind is elsewhere. This is partly true, and partly a result of the use of magic. Once Eli starts something, especially a project he’s passionate about, he has laser sharp focus on that thing, completely drowning out everything else going on in his life (he’s a shit friend to have thanks to this). He’s also a bit of a know-it-all, and looks down to people because he knowns thinks he’s smarter than them. (But he’s an absolute lovely person in every other way i promise!!!)

When he did start learning it, he never got rid of this believe. He still believes it’s bad, he knows what he’s doing is bad, and he refrains from doing it whenever he can help it. Eli would never recklessly use his magic, partly because it’s illegal in Ashmoor, and partly because he can feel himself getting more corrupted every time he uses it. The time it took him how to use dark magic has left him beaten up enough for him to be cautious.

Eli uses his dark magic to create and enhance weapons and magical artifacts. Occasionally he sells them, if he thinks it gets to the people he wants to hurt, but he mostly uses it for himself. Whenever he uses his ability it physically hurts him, and takes a lot of energy. It often takes him more than a day to fully recover from it. He also can't always control it, because of his lack of training. He tries to control this by using only small animals to drain live forces from.

Eli had a happy and unbothered childhood. Coming from a wealthy, noble family, he never had to worry about anything. From a young age his life had been set up for him, and he’s always been happy with what was expected from him. Ever since he started his education, it became clear that Eli was an exceptional learner as well as a promising engineer. As if it wasn’t decided already, it became clear Eli was destined to be the heir of his family.

Because he was showing such excellence, his father decided that it was time for him to be more involved in the family business when Eli was 17. His father assigned him small administrative tasks, and let him work on parts of new advancements without ever letting him know the full story. His father’s right hand, James, was assigned to help Eli with these tasks. Unfortunately for him, James had other intentions then just helping him, and started taking advantage of Eli’s naivety and trust by gathering and manipulating specific information regarding a valuable new invention.

This went on for about three months until a group of people, lead by James, stole the plans and killed the Dumont family in the process.

Eli was sound asleep when it happened, only waking up to the sound of screams. When he went to check on his parents he was already too late, just catching the face of James just before he lost continuous. He spend the rest of the week hidden in his own dungeon, together with his two siblings, getting tortured for information. It didn’t take him long to plan their escape, but in the middle of their runaway they were discovered, and Eli lost his siblings.

Eli ran away from Alderrath, too scared to stay in the city and risk the chance of being discovered. After living off of scraps for the first few weeks, he managed to get a job at a blacksmith in one of the smaller villages, and he started plotting his revenge.

It was never his intention to become a mage. In fact, he was repulsed by the idea of magic, having grown up believing it was dangerous. But he was drawn by the idea of the power it might give him over his enemies. He set off, traveling through the country to learn more about it, but despite his efforts he couldn’t get himself to worship a patron. His attempts at magic all failed, until he learned about dark magic. He would spend the next five years studying the art of dark magic (u know, like any other person would) in Avalon. When he was satisfied with his abilities, he returned to Alderrath.

Eli kept a low profile in the years that followed. He opened an artifacts shop in the middle part of the city, staying out of the rich districts and trying to keep away from enforcers. Now he just mostly focusses on his shop, keeping a close eye on his enemies.
