Combat
Everything about battle threads
As fights can be crucial for a character's way of developing and a little thrill, we wanted to make sure to make them a little more exciting for those who would like that. For this system we use simple dice rolls to determine how the fight progresses. Participating in these kinds of fights is completely optional! Keep in mind, though, that some quests or random events require you to progress through these battles in order to obtain your reward. So make sure to read through this section of the guidebook carefully before starting your combat threads.
Regular Combat
Every combat related thread that does not involve any encounters falls under the regular combat category. This means fights among characters themselves, or fights you play out using your own NPC's for example. Within regular fights, you and the other player are free to determine the outcome. As of now, rolled threads between characters do not exist, the only exception might be things like The Sun Ring in Xaila whenever there's certain events going on.
Rolled Combat
As soon as the Game Master account comes into play announcing an enemy encounter, your character can enter a 'rolled combat' thread. Rolled combat means that for every attack, both yours and that of the enemy, a dice will be rolled by the staff. Rolls are done using a d20, aka a twenty-eyed-dice. Each number will be assessed by the Game Master to determine whether or not it is successful, not at all, or partly so. Low numbers will make your character fail your action. The lower the number, the more horribly your character will fail. The same goes for higher numbers. The higher the number, the better your character will succeed.

The most common way for a rolled combat thread to be started is through an enemy encounter. These can occur in any thread. The encounters within the area's with an (!) are much more dangerous than others.

Rolled Combat Thread Summary

So, what does a rolled combat thread look like? Rolled combat must always be started by the Game Master. This means that you can not start a combat thread by yourself. As soon as Game Master posts an encounter within your thread, there's a few things you can do.

  • Flee: You can always choose to flee from the encounter before the battle has started. No dice will be rolled for this action. After fleeing, the thread will also end.

  • Fight: After an encounter, the player will always be the first to be able to strike an attack. If you choose not to flee, your first post after the encounter will also be the first post of the actual combat.

Since a rolled combat thread is usually done with multiple people, it is allowed for one person to flee the thread while the others choose to fight for example. However, combat or random events are never done solo. Fleeing or attacking is a choice each player character makes for themselves.

As soon as you choose to fight, the battle starts. For every attack, both yours and that of the enemy, a dice will be rolled by the staff. The results of these rolls will be posted within the thread after each attacking, playable character has written their post. After every post, the GM account will post a response describing the enemy's moves, then the player character again, and so on. This will continue until one of the following conditions are met:

  • The enemy is dead.

  • The player character is gravely injured/dead.

  • The player character decides to flee the battle. Fleeing during a battle requires a successful roll.

  • The enemy decides to flee the battle, and the player character does not want to or can't go after them.

After the battle has ended, the GM will close the combat with a final result post. After, you can choose to continue the thread regularly or to end it. After the end of a combat thread, you might find yourself with a shiny new item that was dropped by the enemy!
